A Fun Alphabet Game For The Kids Using Beans: Introducing Alphabeans!

Alphabeans

Isn’t this just too cute? Here’s a new game for the kids that will cost you the price of a bag of lima beans (or any large white bean) and a thin permanent marker. And most kids like tiny things, so these beans have a certain appeal that you just won’t find with any other alphabet game! Note: If you’ll be using the beans to play with I recommend giving them a protective coat of acrylic varnish (spray would be convenient, but do it outside!) or even some clear nail polish. The letters on our beans started to wear off from handling.

I’ve been wanting to teach my kids the English alphabet and was thinking about a letter a week. My husband thinks we can invest far less time with some matching and memory games (this was his idea) so we’re going to give it a try! My instincts tell me that I should do some workbook style coloring exercises together with games like these, and if we come up with anything noteworthy I’ll be sure to share it with you.

As far as the rules of the game, well there are many ways to play depending on your child’s knowledge. For older children you could devise a scrabble type game, and for younger ones a matching game, like which little letter goes with which big letter etc. (As you may have noticed I put a dot at the top of the bean so kids know which way is up.)

  • Now the only dilemma is how to package our new game?  (Instructions for making the adorable packaging here.)I’ve got an idea that I hope to spend maybe 15 minutes on today, so come back tomorrow to see what I’ve created. And by the way, this is not the first post I’ve done involving beans, you can see my previous post about bean mosaics here.

Enjoy and do take a moment to let me know you are out there, with a comment or an email! All the best.

Sara, these are so cute! I am going to use this idea . . . differently, but for the same reason! I will use it to review the aleph-bet instead. *Ü*

Cute game! There’s an amazing website called Starfall.com that will help your kids become English readers in practically no time. My daughter’s at grade level in both English and Hebrew, and the English definitely came from that site.

Thanks so much, so glad to be able to share these ideas instead of just keeping them in my four walls!

What a great idea. I happen to have a bag of lima beans just collecting dust up on a shelf in my kitchen. I think this is what they are destined for. 🙂 My daughter would love the matching game and she indeed can’t get enough tiny things. I’ll have to try this and maybe I’ll even make the bag to go with. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Nicole! Nice to meet you! Actually I soaked and cooked the leftover beans and though I then baked them, they were quite tasty plain with some olive oil and S&P, might be a nice snack to introduce to little ones!

I love this idea. There are never enough spare letters in the commercial alphabet sets! And my kids love teeny tiny things. I’m thinking it might be nice to paint different colors too too.

Hi Laura, so glad to know you are out there! Different colored beans is a great idea, and it sure would match the pouch! One important revision in the instructions, beans need
to be coated with a protective layer of acrylic varnish or anything clear (nail polish?). The letters on our beans are starting to wear off after being played with just a bit.
    Enjoy!

Yep, I’m here and regularly following your blog!
Always interested in your craft ideas for my kids when they come home from gan. I love the simple ideas the best, and so do my kids (the Chanukiah with the spongy paper was a winner)
Thanks for the tip about the nail varnish!

P.S. Did you get my email about the broken link on a previous post of yours?

  17. Sara Rivka Avatar

Yes, thanks so much, I didnt make it past the audition round of the crafty contest, (and saw that quite early on) so I just dropped the whole idea from the
blog, for which I had posted the link that didnt work. Im going to audition again in another 10 weeks and hopefully choose an audition project that the audience will
    like more…..

Great Laura, so happy to hear! Please take photos of any projects that you do from the blog, as Id be happy to share them with readers, either on the blog or in the
flickr group that I need to get up and running. all the best!

How many of each letter did you make? A capital/ lower case each?

  20. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi JD, I actually made three sets of capital/lower case, because my kids are just learning the alphabet. For a spelling game I imagine it would
be good to add another few sets of vowels. All the best, and do drop by my blog linking party on Sunday, would love to have you!
