The Hula valley, located in the Galil between Rosh Pina and Kiryat Shemona was once a large area of swamp land. In 1951, after the founding of the state of Israel, much of this swamp land was drained in order to be used as viable farming area. Fortunately there were at that time a group of ecologists who rallied to save a portion of this important natural site, which is today known as the Hula Valley Nature Preserve, or the Hula Valley Lake.
Once a very important resting site for bird migrating from Europe to Africa, the preserve is still an active site for several hundred species of migrating birds, especially in October, when the swamp is packed with bird visitors (we hope to return then!)
An elevated wooden path takes you out amongst the swamp and to the lake area of the preserve. Along the way we saw many turtles and giant catfish!
I just loved the feeling of walking amongst the tall swamp grasses!
And I was especially happy to share this amazing place, in our beautiful country, with my children. (I highly recommend the museum and 3D video presentation with effects that the kids will just love!)
