Handmade Holiday: Simple Crocheted Washcloths…Pure Luxury!

Crocheted Sage Stitch Washcloths

Crocheted washcloths? Really? Yes! And in any case, if you think I’ve crossed the line into crafting insanity, well I can’t take credit for this now popular idea of crocheting washcloths and dishcloths from 100% cotton yarn. I’ll have to admit, I was a bit sceptical myself! But the more crocheted washcloths I saw, the more I realized that there must be something to it. Suddenly I found myself itching to crochet some washcloths, but without any of the right type of cotton yarn in my neck of the woods I was stumped. That is until livyahyarn.com’s wonderful Lion Brand cotton yarn sale in Israel, and here you have it! A crafter’s dream come true.

I really can’t explain it, but these washcloths are just pure heaven, to look at that is, I haven’t used them because well, I might need them as a gift! But there are those who swear by crocheted washcloths for their facial cleansing routine, and besides that there’s just something so downright luxurious about the idea! I think it’s a great gift for male or female alike, and unlike a sweater or scarf, these washcloths are pretty quick to whip up, maybe an hour for one, for an average crocheter, which isn’t bad for a handmade gift. Of course you’ll need at least three to make your gift look like something, but I think it’s worth it! If not, so make some for yourself as a decoration, don’t they look precious bundled up and tied with a ribbon? In the future I might create washcloths suitable for babies, too, perhaps at least 7 since I need that many baby washcloths.

You’ll Need:

  • 100% cotton yarn, ideally in a nice worsted weight like the Lion Brand Cotton I used….if you live in Israel or want to send a gift to someone in Israel, so check out livyahyarn.com
  • a crochet hook, sized J or appropriate size for your yarn
  • a simple pattern, like the sedge stitch that I used, but there are endless possibilities!

How To: Sedge Stitch Washcloth (from lionbrand.com check 0ut their site for tons of great patterns, washcloths and everything else too!)

I have already made 5 of these. So far this is the best pattern I have ever used – and I have used DOZENS and made hundreds of washcloths. I am doing up tons of these for gifts this year. Thanks so much for this lovely, lovely pattern. (I made one for myself and LOVE it – it is my favorite dishcloth right now).

What do you do with the various colours left over ? The bits of yarn left from making a dishcloth?!

  21. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Anna, I would tie them together and make another dishcloth if you have enough, or use them to make tassels or pom poms for gift toppers! All the best!
