Birthday Wreath From Cupcake Liners + Paper Plate Flowers

Cupcake Liner Birthday Wreath
A birthday wreath made from cupcake liner flowers and paper plate flowers is the perfect decoration for your front door, and something you can certainly hang in the birthday girl’s room afterwards as a nice reminder. Yesterday was my daughter’s ninth birthday, and the last opportunity to make something like this, since double digits would be twice the work! While this looks fairly straight forward, it is time consuming and not something one could whip up at the last minute. Even the night before was stretching it, believe me!

Today is the first day of the Jewish month of Av, ushering in an intense nine day period of mourning before our most solemn holiday, Tisha B’Av. So while posting festive birthday projects doesn’t seem quite appropriate, I thought I’d post just this one, since the number nine happens to be quite fitting!

How To:

Draw a number on a piece of cardboard, I used an open cereal box. Cut out number. Make a bunch of paper plate flowers and start by adhering those to the cardboard with hot glue. Fill in with cupcake liner flowers and flowers which consist of cupcake liners on the outside, and rolled paper plate rim flowers on the inside. For smaller flowers you can also cut the paper plate rim in half depth wise, which when rolled makes a great center to glue inside some cupcake liners. Fill in empty spaces with cupcake liners such that no cardboard is visible, and you’re done!

For DIY wedding decor, one could certainly use this idea to make the initials of the bride and groom, and of course doing them in just cupcake liners is a nice idea as well, though the paper plate flowers add a bit of joyful whimsy that will make everyone smile!

I love this combo with the fluffy cupcake liners and paper plates. I like that you could carry the birthday theme through my using the same plates you will use to serve the cake.

Making the paper wreaths for a child’s party is a good idea. It doesn’t seem complicated, so depending on the ages, it might even be a fun activity for the kids to do while sitting under a lovely patio umbrella to make them feel kinda grown up.

How did you hang the number? And (approx) how large was your cut out? Hard to tell in pics! Thank you- love the wreath.

Hi Kate, Because the door is glass, I used double stick tape, the heavy duty foam kind. One could also put a string hook on the back, even running the string through the cardboard before its decorated.
I used a cereal box completely opened at the seams, and the finished height was about 22 long and about 12 wide at its widest point. All the best!

I was hoping you could give me the size of the baking cups you used…and where I could purchase large/medium baking cups? Are these something that I will need to order off line?

  16. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Sydney, I used regular muffin sized cups for the largest size and then two other smaller sizes….sorry dont have any left to measure! I found them at my local grocery store
so you can certainly find them too!

For this wreath, did you still use a needle or wire through the cupcake liners, or did you just glue it with the hot glue gun?

  25. Sara Rivka Avatar

    Just glued it, much quicker!
