Crocheted Doily Rug

Crocheted doiley rug with wooden shoes

Two more things to cross off my crafty to-do list: 1. make a giant rug sized crochet doily 2. try crocheting with zpagetti, the recycled fabric remnant yarn made in, you guessed, it The Netherlands!

You can crochet a giant doily and use it as a rug, or even as well, a giant doily! This one would look great on a round table, or just about anywhere really. I have to admit though, as much as I just love this rug doily, I really don’t have a use for it, good thing this was a quick project made over two afternoons while the kids were playing on the living room floor!

Crocheted Doily Rug 2

I wish I could tell you that this is just the greatest project and the greatest yarn, oh well— I love the rug, but I wouldn’t recommend using a single strand of zpagetti for a rug with an open pattern like this one. I would recommend making your own yarn from jersey fabric or recycled t-shirts which will produce a thicker rug, or crocheting with two strands of zpagetti, that could be GREAT, or try using a size 9mm hook instead of the 12 mm hook that the zpagetti people recommend for their product, really with more fashion accessories in mind.

Now I’m really tempted to try making this doily rug with rags, namely sheets, or maybe with some thick rug wool I’ve got up in the attic somewhere…….As for the pattern, I sort or made it up by piecing together elements from other patterns, so while it’s not a perfect pattern, I’ll be happy to share it with you when I have a moment to type it up. I’m hoping to share it with you but with a very busy life I still haven’t gotten to it, sorry about that!  you can find the pattern here. And by the way, I did actually make a crocheted rug from rags last summer, like in 2010 that I, gasp, never shared with you! So stay tuned for that project coming up soon!

Please please share this pattern – or a similar one – I have sheet rags just begging to be made into a rug – this would be stunning

  2. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Nina, Ill try to do that soon, but cant guarantee that a doily rug like this will be quite as gorgeous made in rags….I hope to get to it this week, or at least do the middle section as a test, so stay tuned!

Your pics are amazing!! What do you shoot with?
    I’d like a pattern, too! 🙂

  4. Sara Rivka Avatar

Thanks Esti! I recently, well really just before Pesach, got a Cannon Rebel T3i……my first SLR and am still struggling to get the picture quality I would like and to master the camera…..which as Ive been reading happens to so many….the thing is that the automatic mode really isnt great for my craft shots, so Ive had to play around a lot. Ive started reading the manual with my morning cup of coffee! and hope to finally learn about photography soon!

This is crazy cute! What size hook did you use?

  11. Sara Rivka Avatar

Thanks Meredith, you can learn to crochet……with a little patience and some videos on youtube, and maybe a friend to teach you the ropes and some more patience…..its so so worth the effort, youll never look back!

  12. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Michele, I used a 12mm, since thats what came with the yarn, but had a gut feeling I should have gone with something smaller….and truthfully I was right, a 9 or 10mm would have produced a less flimsy rug.
all the best, pattern coming next week.

Sara, wow what a great idea, so different from all the bags i have seen sofar, i would like to make one for my daughters bedroom, how many rows was your doily pattern? and how much zpagetti did you use? thank you for helping 🙂

  33. Sara Rivka Avatar

I used about 1 1/2 skeins of zpagetti, but I have to be honest, the rug as I made it is really too flimsy for my purposes. I think for this to be successful you would have to use two strands of zpaghetti crocheted together unless flimsy doesnt bother you. Many of my readers are waiting for the pattern, so coming up hopefully in a few days.

  53. Lissa Brooks Avatar

Still waiting for the pattern – it’s so pretty. I noticed people have been asking for it since October… any idea when you’ll have it up?

  54. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi LIssa, Sorry about the delay, Im sure you can imagine that just keeping up the blog with new projects is very very time consuming, and since its really a labor of love at this point I really cant make it a priority more than I have! And yes, I know you all are waiting, just please understand that I really am no expert at patterns but Ill do my best in the next few weeks. Ive now learned my lesson, write down what youre doing as you do it!

  55. Anneliese Avatar

I love your doily rug! I have been looking and looking for a rug for one of my daughters’ rooms and I think a doily rug is the answer! I am so excited. Thank you. (I’ll link to you when I do it and post about it…coming soon I hope.)

  56. Sara Rivka Avatar

Thanks so much Anneliese, great to hear from you. As you can see in the comments so many are waiting for me to publish the pattern which I have yet to get to, though Im sure you can come up with something yourself. I have to say though that with the doily rug its quite important what yarn you use, since the one Ive shown here looks beautiful in the photo but is really too limp for a rug that is in any area of traffic.
Id recommend rope, the cord thats used for piping or something stiff, the t-shirt yarn is great, but I really could have used two strands together to get something more substantial. All the best and cant wait to see what you come up with!

This is a wonderful rug and I love your red wooden shoes. Did you paint them yourself? I just found your blog today and have been filled with inspiration. I am going to crochet something as soon as my daughter goes to sleep tonight. Thank you for helping me find my lost love of crochet.

  65. Sara Rivka Avatar

Thanks so much Angela, so glad you found me! The red wooden shoes were purchased as is, theyre wearable (for my daughter) but really souvenirs from the Netherlands, though she did wear them this year as part of her Dutch Doll Purim costume…..you can look under the Purim category to find that one! all the best and keep in touch!

Just stumbled upon this on pinterest and OMGoodness…I have been searching everywhere for a pattern like this..i need a HUGE doily to use as a tablecloth on my round dining table- did you by chance ever get the pattern up? and also what would you reccomend using to create this…i would think that traditional thread would be too thing or small to make it look good…

  70. Sara Rivka Avatar

I Casey, I still have not had a spare moment to get the pattern written up….if you need one for a table there are so many out there, you just use something thick instead of regular yarn. For a table, the t-shirt yarn that I used would be great since its soft, as it really came out too flimsy to use on the floor. Other thick yarns like rope or clothesline are more appropriate for rugs. Or you could use say five strands of yarn together or maybe fewer, do a swatch to see what works. All the best!

love love love. for someone who doesn’t know how to knit, but is a good crocheter it is exciting to be able to make something that is not a kippa.
i have a Q. how do i make the string? just cut up sheets in to strips?
    thanks and chag sumach!

  76. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Tamar, This rug was actually crocheted with t-shirt yarn that I bought in Amsterdam, but you can certainly make your own. One can use old t-shirts, but the easiest thing to use for a project like a rug, that would require a huge number of shirts, is jersey (knit) yardage that you may be able to find very inexpensively, or I have heard some other bloggers talk about knit sheets which would be great as well if you could find them at a local thrift store. Crocheting with yarn made from sheets is also great, but since its much stiffer you cant get the same delicate doily look. Look up crocheting with sheets and how to make yarn from t-shirts in the search box on my blog to access previous posts of mine on both topics. Oh and of course in the crocheting category youll find tons of great projects! Chag Sameach, off to work on the Succah!
