Crocheted Rag Rug From Sheets

Crocheting rugs from recycled sheets, comforter covers and pillow cases is simple and the results are great! The rug is heavy weight and can be thrown into the washing machine for cleaning. Plus it’s just a great feeling to make a gorgeous rug from rags…..what more can I say? I actually made this rug over a year ago, and put it aside to save for a publishing project that hasn’t yet happened, so lucky you I decided to share it!

I used a size 9mm hook, though do a test to see what works for you…..the crocheting should be tight enough so that there aren’t holes, (unless you like how it looks) as you can see in the top photo in my post about crocheting with sheets here.

This rug was crocheted from both solid sheets (the center pink and blue) and patterned ones too, and I love the combination! The speckled orange ring just after the pink ring was made from striped sheets, so don’t be afraid to use patterns!

And by the way, this rug wasn’t made in just a few hours like the smaller crocheted doily here, but you can make it relatively quickly, and if you start now you could even make a few in time for holiday gift giving! And if you’re not up for a rug, so how about a round stool or ottoman cover….that you could whip up in a few hours! Have fun and let me know if you crochet something from rags, or if you need any advice!

For info on how to make yarn from sheets, see the bottom of my post here, and stay tuned for a more concise post on the subject, as I’ve recently discovered another technique that I just need to try out first!

It’s a beauty Sara! It reminds me of the old rugs from my childhood that my mother and aunts used to make…

Thanks for the comment on my blog! I love crocheted rag rugs but have never had the gumption to make one myself. How do you dry this after washing? (I guess what I really want to know is, does it dry thoroughly and without taking too long?)
    A very beautiful rug.

Honestly, I havent washed this, but I would dry it outside on a sunny day, and since where I live the sun is very hot, Im quite sure it would dry quite quickly! And if necessary a rug this size can certainly be put in the dryer, right? I can imagine that possibly a braided rug made from wool might be problematic washing and drying wise, but this isnt quite that thick and after all, its made of sheets! all the best!

This rug is absolutely gorgeous! I would love to make one for my daughter’s room. Do you have a pattern that you used? I’m not very good at making up patterns as I go and would much rather have a pattern to work from. Thanks!

Just start the rug using any basket pattern, which you can find on my blog, hopefully in the search box!

I love this! I have to make one. Do you know about how many sheets it took?

  13. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Thanks so much. So basically it took at least six sheets, 2 twin comforter covers, one queen sized comforter cover and about four pillowcases. You really cant have too many sheets, it takes quite a few. As the rug gets bigger a regular fitted twin sheet may only provide enough yarn for two rounds.

Thanks so much. I can’t wait to get started!

Youre welcome Andy! Id say that with a rag rug you just sort of have to play it by ear, as you cant really be sure how much youll need or how the patterned sheets will look until you crochet with them! all the best!

    hello sara 🙂
your rag rugs are GORgeous! i’ve had an ‘almost complete’ one in a box in my closet for about 30 years. my mom started it for me when i was little but never finished. i’m looking for step by step photo instructions (should probably try a small one on my own before tackling completing hers as i don’t want to mess it up)…do you have instructions posted somewhere (can’t seem to find them)?
    thanks so much,
    jennifer

Hi Jennifer, thanks so much. I dont have photo instructions posted anywhere though if you know how to crochet so its really the same as crocheting with yarn, you just need a hook at least 10mm and some rags.
If you read through all of my posts I think youll get the idea and just make sure to make your strips of rags wide enough and to crochet loosely otherwise it can be quite difficult to get the hook into the stitches.
all the best, happy to answer any questions you might have!

I never thought to use sheets!! I have been searching for a GIANT bathmat for my rather large bathroom. No luck — I am going to make my own! THANKS so much for posting!

I made one from denim (very hard work). I don’t think my hands could stand the strain now, but it was fun at the time.

  23. Sara Rivka Avatar

Wow, from denim, that must have been VERY hard, the sheets is hard enough! You should try crocheting with store bought t-shirt yarn, pure pleasure!

It is really a beautiful rug, especially for home decoration
