A stunning mixture of plants fill this windowbox creation. A batik curtain is perfect!
Yesterday my children reported to me that our friend Chava has cucumbers and pumpkins growing in her garden! So this morning I decided to take a walk with my daughter, camera in hand, to see just what Chava had grown in the "garden" over at her place. I guess I haven't passed her house in quite a while, as there were so many new and wonderous sights to see!
A tropical hibiscus and a cucumber vine, both grown in containers!
As I was sorting through the photos I'd taken I was thinking about how one's garden can not only be a form of creative expression but also a reflection of their creative soul! Chava and I are both from California, and yet our gardens are so very different. She tells me how inspired she is by mine and I likewise!
Chava's garden is a blend of color and texture, organic and lush, unstudied and yet so naturally perfect! My garden on the other hand is more formal, relying on pure form as opposed to letting nature take it's course, a city designer moved to the country sort of look!
There are beautiful flowers grown from seed, and corn!
The more I thought about Chava's garden, the more everything started to make sense. She is after all Chava (Eve)! Her very essence is rooted in the Garden of Eden. While I on the other hand am Sara Rivka (Rebecca), the first two mothers of the Jewish People, who were much more tent (home) oriented than garden oriented! So it makes perfect sense then that my garden would be more like a design extension of my home as opposed to a tropical paradise!
Green peppers growing in a window box! A sunflower, and morning glories.
Oh,and there's another oh so important detail that I left out about Chava, she is Chava BenTzion, midwife! Now it's all really making sense, she is a nurturer by nature and profession! So no one should be surprised to see tiny vegetables and flowers growing out of the most unexpected places!
Beautiful and delicate purple flowers share space with a tiny tree. Chava's charming hand-painted sign requesting in Hebrew "please don't pick the flowers and the plants".
A morning glory, a pumpkin! and seeds being started in small containers.
Chava is an amazing example of how one can make something wonderful from whatever one has been given. You might think that she has a small plot of land or even a courtyard. In actuality the tiny corner of the world that Chava has transformed into her own mini Gan Eden, is nothing more than the walls of her old stone home that border on a small alley! Want to see what it looks like?
Here it is! Chava's home and garden, surprised aren't you?
So, that's the story of my morning walk, and the pure happiness I felt while discovering with my daughter all the treasures to behold in this tiny garden. And I really enjoyed writing this blog post because for once I got the chance to mostly talk about someone other than myself! How refreshing!
Do you have a story to tell? I'd love to hear it! Send some good quality photos and we can work together! Looking forward to hearing from you!
