I was intrigued by a crocheted potholder/hotpad like this that I spotted last year, but just couldn't locate the pattern. So I forgot all about it until last night when I came across the same project and the pattern and just had to give it a try during the late night hours when everyone else was fast asleep! (That might account for the slightly drab color combo- I used what I had on hand.....!) This is such a fun project, and quite quick (Depending on your skills, maybe about 40 minutes ) for a project of this nature. I even whipped up another one this morning! (Self indulgent I know.....but I did it for you, really!)
I actually made the green one first and for my second try I decided to see how a colored center would look. These photos were actually taken from different sides of the potholder, with different color variations, so you decide which one you prefer! The original pattern which you can find here, calls for stripes which I thought detracted from the beauty of the folds, on the other hand the stripes lend a vintage look to the project that might be right for you. Now you have a few options to choose from!
Note 1: In both cases I added an extra row at the end that is not specified in the pattern. When crocheting this row, do NOT crochet in the slip stitch of the previous row.
Note 2: Don't get discouraged trying to figure out how to fold the piece, look at the photo and play around a bit until you get it. With the tip of each petal facing your body twist petal under to the left. Here's a before and after photo, with this one the flower actually folded itself more or less!
Note 3: In the row after folding, join petals on the eighth stitch down from the tip of the petal, not including that top stitch.
Note 4: With all these additions to the pattern I may just be able to re-write it and post it here, hmm?
Note 5 : I think these would look great felted, (make with 100% wool and throw into a hot load of laundry) and then even sewn onto a pillow!
Note 6: To those of you who haven't yet learned to crochet, I really recommend it! Great for take along projects and resting your weary bones on the couch!
