Here's the cake I promised to share with you yesterday! Isn't it just amazing what one can do with some styrofoam balls and a few pipe cleaners one (well, me anyway) has sitting around? I must say, I even surprised myself, especially since when I started making these birds for the party I really had no idea that I'd end up using them on the cake!
As you can see, though decorations are my specialty, when it comes to icing, well, I've got a lot to learn! (And I don't usually buy margarine, so that makes things more difficult!) In retrospect the birds would have looked cuter on just an all white cake, or on a light blue or pink cake, but since this was created and assembled under great pressure on a Friday afternoon while the rest of the family was taking their pre-Shabbat nap, you'll understand that fact that I didn't quite achieve perfection this time around! And I took the photo in such a hurry I even got icing on the camera and the sprinkles were flying!
You'll Need:
- styrofoam balls in various sizes to make babies, (a single ball) a mommy bird and a daddy bird
- pipe cleaners
- acrylic craft paint
- tooth picks
- a hot glue gun
- felt (optional, I used some yellow felt to define the wings of the largest bird)
- a black permanent marker
How To:
- Stick a tooth pick into each ball, and while holding onto toothpick, paint each ball. You may need two coats for even coverage.
- Use a piece of styrofoam as a drying rack, or anything that you can puncture.
- Once balls are dry, glue heads to bodies with hot glue.
- Form feathers and wings from pipe cleaners and affix to balls by poking them into the ball with a dab of hot blue on the ends.
- Draw simple details with a black permanent marker.
- Poke a toothpick into the bottom of each bird for use as cake decorations.
- Assemble your cute bird family and don't forget to take a picture to share with me!
- And by the way, this would be adorable for a baby shower don't you think?
