A crocheted doll blanket is a wonderful handmade gift that is sure to make a little someone in your life very happy. And pair it with a little pillow (coming soon?) or a doll bed, and you've got yourself a winner!
I was also thinking that it's a great way to try out a design that you may have been dreaming about making afghan size! I've had my eye on this retro zig-zag pattern for a while now, and though I really don't know if I have the time or patience to make a real life sized blanket, I sure enjoyed making this little one. I was thinking that maybe I'd be able to cross this project off my list, the only problem is, that is not the case! The weaving in of all the ends did take an hour even for this little blanket, but somehow I'm longing to do more, maybe baby blanket size next time, and in colors that I love? This little blanket has it's charm as a doll blanket, but its color scheme isn't something I'd ever choose on purpose— it's a result of trying to use up some left overs! (Lion Cotton to be exact, available in Israel at this online yarn store.)
Have some fun yourself and give this simple stitch a try. One thing I really love about it is that the edges are somehow quite neat, unlike some crochet stitches. This could be a great stitch for a scarf, a funky skirt for a little girl, or even a decorative band for a solid colored fabric pillow!
Zig Zag Stitch:
- Crochet a chain divisible by 14 plus 1, ch 2, turn
- Row 1: 1sc into 3rd ch from hook, *1 sc into each of next 5ch, skip 3ch, 1sc into each of next 5ch, 3sc into next ch, repeat from * to end, but end with 2sc into last chain instead of 3.
- Row 2: 1ch, 1sc into first stitch, *1sc into each of next 5sc, skip 2sc, 1sc inot each of next 5sc, 3sc into next sc, repeat from * to ed, but ending with 2sc into last stitch.
- Repeat Row 2 throughout, changing colors as desired. In the doll blanket rows were worked in each color.
Note: If you somehow get off stitch wise, just increase stitches where needed to make sure you have multiples of 5, and that your peaks and valleys fall in the same place. I kept loosing stitches somehow, so I added them where necessary, and everything worked out just fine! And I think it will with you too, especially if you're doing this with love, which I'm quite sure you will be!
