Super Simple DIY Twig Luminary (For Tu B’Shevat!)

Tu B'Shevat Twig Luminaries

You can make a gorgeous winter centerpiece with twigs and candlelight and it’s so simple! And of course anything using twigs is great for your Tu B’Shevat (the New Year for the trees) table. Add a few branches if you have some available, even from your neighbor’s pruning pile, and you’ve got yourself a great look, especially on an elegant, creme tablecloth! I’ve used olive branches, which I think are perfect, thanks to some branches I found hanging out on someones sidewalk. So take a nature walk with the kids, or even yourself, collect some little twigs (of course the neighbor’s pruning might also be a good source for those too…) and enjoy. If you’re snowed in, with no source of twigs in sight, so you can use some wooden skewers, and even paint them brown. Add a few beads for texture, and yours will look lovely too! And you can find the instructions for my kosher salt snowstorm luminaries here, I think the two look great together.

You’ll Need:

  • twigs
  • pruning shears or very sharp scissors
  • a jar, mine is from date syrup (silan)
  • a piece of ribbon, I used a metallic silver one, but velvet would look great too.Choose either something shiny and textured or colors from nature for an elegant look
  • a hot glue gun

How To:

  1. Cut ribbon to proper length to go around jar and tie with a know or a bow
  2. Place ribbon on work surface, with backside up
  3. With a hot glue gun, glue twigs to ribbon, centering vertically, but not worrying about length
  4. Trim twigs approximately at top and bottom, but focus on the bottom section, since that will need to be the right length in order to tie around jar.
  5. Tie around jar and trim twigs or leave them a bit on the long side so that they at least cover the neck of the jar.
  6. Make a whole bunch in different sizes and enjoy!
  7. You can use this same technique to cover a cylindrical glass vase or even a cylindrical glass light fixture!
