Here is the cutest and simplest castle birthday cake that I think will please your child just as much as a complex iced castle cake that took at least a whole day to make, and was anyway devoured in a matter of minutes! And you could certainly use this same idea to make a barnyard birthday cake or a city skyline birthday cake, or a rainbow birthday cake, or just about anything you can dream up!
Mind you, if it makes you happy to labor over a complicated castle birthday cake, so go right ahead, it just so happens that I have absolutely no cake decorating experience, so working with paper is certainly preferable to working with sugar, in my case! And given my limited time (especially for this particular birthday which falls in the middle of the Passover preparations frenzy) my skills are most wisely used in quickly (and secretly) creating a totally decorated birthday table and festive environment. And really, these little decorations took about 15 minutes to make, and I was so happy with those little castles and the loch ness monster that it still makes me smile. Mind you, the younger kids who have never heard of the Loch Ness monster kept asking why there was a snake on the cake, but that just made it even funnier!

You'll Need:
- one basic chocolate cake, recipe here
- simple chocolate mocha glaze icing, recipe here
- green card stock
- permanent markers and/or paint markers, the best!
- skewers and toothpicks
- tape
- one copy of Ed Emberley's Make A World
How To:
Peruse Make A World, or any simple geometric based drawing book and find some simple pictures that you can copy on a larger scale. Have fun making your drawings using just a few colors on colored paper, and then cut them out. One could certainly use this same idea to make a themed cake of almost any kind. Tape skewers and toothpicks to the backs of your drawings and stick them into the iced cake. Congratulate yourself on a job well done! You see, decorating a birthday cake doesn't have to be stressful, it can be downright fun!
