Passover Craft For Kids: Make Tiny Wine Cups And Eliyahu's Goblet

Last week at Crafting A Future I taught my 1st and 2nd grade girls how to draw wine glasses and goblets, and then how to make sweet little "silver" cups to represent the four cups at the Passover Seder, and a larger version to represent the goblet that we fill for Eliyahu HaNavi (Elijah The Prophet).

So, how does one draw a wine glass? Well, it's quite simple, first you draw a half circle/elipse for the base, then you draw the neck with two lines, then on top of that you draw another half circle, this one facing up, and on top of that you draw a square. Got it?

Once the girls were able to draw a wine glass, I had them draw one good one on cardboard, which they then used as a template to make the four cups. The cardboard cups were cut out pasted to aluminum foil, and then cut out again leaving a margin of aluminum foil around each cup. Fold the aluminum foil to the back, smoothing edges with fingers, and then add details with red and black permanent markers.

That's it, set aside little cups for a future project!

Container Gardening: For The Love Of Cyclamen!

I was given this gorgeous bright pink Cyclamen plant as a gift at the end of December, and now three months later it's still blooming! After enjoying this one for a week or two, I couldn't resist picking up a few smaller ones, which you can see below. And they too, have been giving non-stop blooms despite the huge range of temperatures we've experienced, from snow to warm Spring.

I've been keeping these pots outdoors and in the shade, though one can keep cyclamens indoors, given low enough temperatures, or just put icecubes in the pot now and then! For more information about how to care for cyclamens, see my post from two years ago here.

I'll have to admit, last time I had a cyclamen I didn't know exactly how to care for it after the blooms stopped and did not follow my own instructions. This year I'm going to see if I can successfully save the tubers once the plants die back and try to re-pot them again next year, that is if they don't get thrown out!

For those of you who live in the Southern Hemisphere, you can enjoy cyclamen soon, for the rest of you, try to remember this post until next year!

Kid's Craft For Passover: Fun Pop Art Inspired Signs From Recycled Boxes!

Pop art inspired signs made from kid friendly gouche and corrugated cardboard are the perfect Passover craft to keep the kids busy right about now!

Kids love making signs, which are especially useful during the process of getting the house ready for Passover, as they alert and remind all that enter the home which areas have been thoroughly cleaned and therefore should not be entered with a sandwich in hand or a bag of pretzels! (Since all things or traces of things made with grains is what we are trying to remove during the process of cleaning for Passover. Truthfully, the only part of the house that really truly needs to be scoured from top to bottom is the kitchen, but most of us prefer to scour our entire house from top to bottom, as it just feels great entering the holiday with a ship shape house, as much as possible that is!)

Now back to the crafting— I remembered what a great job my daughter did with the giant toothpaste prop, and thought maybe she'd like to try something similar with cleaning products for some Passover signs, and voila, she did a great job, and her sign is now hanging proudly on her door, as her room has been cleaned from top to bottom and is ready for Passover!.

You'll Need:

• corrugated cardboard, or any cardboard
• kid's paints, like gouche
• a black permanent marker
• scissors, hole punch and ribbon

How To: Draw large shapes of cleaning products with a pencil, and then fill in with paint, or just get started with the paints as my daughter did. Once dry, add details with a permanent black marker. Make a few shapes and connect them together with ribbon.

Hopefully the kids will love this one enough to spend a good chunk of time on it while you continue with the cleaning! Enjoy!

 

Make T-Shirt Yarn From Your Kid's Old T-Shirts!

What does any obsessed crafter do in the middle of her intense top to bottom house cleaning in preparation for the holiday of Passover? Why of course, she gathers up all those old shirts that she wouldn't want her kids to be caught wearing out of the house, and she uses them to make t-shirt yarn. A great reason to take a break from all that cleaning and much needed organizing, right? And who knows, once you start using the yarn you've made you may need to clean out some more closets and drawers to find some more t-shirts for the cause, and that would be considered cleaning, right?

Passover Craft For Kids: Four Cups Of Wine Paper Doll Chain

Yesterday at Crafting A Future, my lively group of boys ages 7-10 had a great time making this four cups  Passover wall hanging craft, and I have to say, the results really are adorable! I was inspired by the dancing wine goblets I made some years ago, but needed a way to make them into a project that could be easily taken home by the kids and hung on the wall. Fortunately a strip of recycled cereal box cardboard affixed to the back of the paper "doll" chain did the trick!

And when I realzed that scalloped circles actually resemble the round hand made matza that most of us eat, or at least for the seder, the project took on another dimension.

These funny guys are wearing yarmulkes, and look like sculptures, don't they?

Some of the older boys decided to make their four cups also represent the four sons that are written about in the Passover seder, a great idea!

You'll Need:

• colored paper
• recycled cardboard
• markers
• a scalloped circle punch (optional)
• hole punch
• ribbon

How To:

Teach kids how to fold a letter or A4 piece of colored paper into four, accordian wise, and then teach them how to draw a simple wine glass/goblet. Draw arms such that the hands reach the folds, and cut out the glass. Glue the top pf the set of four glasses to a piece of cardboard to provide them with a stable base. Add details to the cups with markers and cut paper, attach scalloped circles to the bottom of the cups if desired. Punch holes in strip of cardboard and hang with a ribbon. Hang and enjoy!

Cereal Box Gift Bags With Stamped Patterns For All Ages!

Aren't these cereal box gift bags wonderful? And while we made these for Purim, they're great year round to use for gifts or even as fun catchalls. And they can look super regardless of the artistic skill of the child or adult making them! These were made by 1st and 2nd graders, or rather the boxes were stamped with potatoes and sponges, then I hot glued them together, and in some cases a black marker was use to add some hand drawn details.

 I love the innocent little drawings, precious!

And if you'd like to do this project in your home why not decorate a bunch and then store them flat until the need for a great gift bag arises!

You'll Need: cereal and cracker boxes carefully split open at the seam, and stamped with potatoes and sponges, and even painted on with kid friendly gouach paint.

How To: After artwork is dry, reassemble your box, this time inside out, using hot glue. Of course you'l leave the top open, and you can choose to cut the flaps off at the top, or glue then down which actually serves to cover some of the printed surface, making a cleaner finish. Punch holes for handles, this will take a bit of effort if you've glued the flaps down, and attach some elegant ribbon.

 

Crocheted Beard Makes A Fabulous Costume Accessory!

The crocheted beard that I whipped up for my eight year old's Mordechai HaTzaddik costume was a huge success! Not only did it complete his costume, it was comfortable to wear, and even kept him warm as the Purim party/barbeque we attended went into the night and temperatures dropped!

Sock Hobby Horse DIY Fit For A King (Or Mordechai HaTzaddik!)

Want to make the cutest ever sock hobby horse for one of your little darlings? I made this one last Thursday night (rather than sleep, you know how it goes.....) as a part of my eight year old's Mordechai HaTzaddik purim costume, and it was a major hit! I've been wanting to make a sock hobby horse using a broomstick for years, and once my son gave me the go ahead all I had to do was make it happen. Fortunately, there's a great DIY from light blue grey, which is what I basically followed, though with lots of short cuts on account of needing to make this guy asap.
