Tons of flower crafting going on around here with the holiday of Shavuot coming up next week, so when I was asked to make some last minute flower centerpieces for a community get together, I just rolled up my sleeves a bit further, and got to work, and came up with these fun newsprint and crepe paper flowers, which I barely had time to photograph! And if you mix some real printed (though only black and white) newspages in there with plain ones, the effect could be fantastic.
What the party organizer didn't know, is that one would need a ton of regular crepe paper to make the sixteen large flowers she requested, and that truthfully the "regular" crepe paper just doesn't really cut it when trying to make nice flowers.....one needs to use either tissue paper or heavy weight crepe paper designed for crafting flowers (regular crepe paper works fine for smaller flowers, but they're not usually very durable.) Nonetheless, the party had to go on, and fortunately I have a ton of giant newsprint sheets just begging to be used up, and they worked perfectly in this case to make strong free standing flowers, that when combined with the colorful crepe paper make a nice color statement.
In addition to making super budget friendly centerpieces, these newsprint and crepe paper flowers would look amazing attached to a large frame of some kind for a wall installation, or attached right to the wall in a grid for a stunning backdrop.
Do keep in mind that the flowers do take about 15 minutes each to make, so a grid of 16 flowers will take four hours. Well worth it in my opinion, but of course you gotta schedule that chunk of time into your plans.
