Succulents are all the rage, and rightfully so, as they are so very very easy to care for, propogate with almost no effort and come in so many wonderful varieties. And if you're lucky, maybe some of your succulents will even surprise you with stunning flowers! Succulents are also generally slow growing and are thus perfect for using in mixed pots, as I've done here.
Just before Rosh HaShana, which marked the beginning of the shemittah year here in Israel, in which no planting is allowed in accordance with the Torah, I spent some time getting my container garden in tip top shape, and decided to fill this pot, which graces our outdoor coffee table with something that would hopefully stay looking good for an entire year.
And thus this composition, which even slightly follows the thriller, filler and spiller laws of container design, was born! The bird's nest sansevieria is the thriller, (actually a mother which I purchased last year and her babies that I discovered in the pot!) the filler is a variety of small pieces of succulents whose names I don't know off hand, and the spiller is the succulent known as string of pearls which spills over the side of the planter. Do start a collection of succulents yourself (or raid the garden of a friend?) and in no time you'll be able to make gorgeous succulent arrangements too!
And of course, for those of you who live in Israel, well you'll have lots of time until after next Rosh Hashana to give this some thought!
