While you are cleaning out those closets, do put aside some of your kids old t-shirts, as well as anything made from jersey fabric, like undershirts, and collared polo shirts, to make your own t-shirt yarn! If you stumble across a sheet made from jersey fabric while you're cleaning out the linen closet, you've struck gold! (Just by the way, jersey fabric is knit fabric, like that used to make underwear, t-shirts, and other items.)
It is true, the yarn you make from upcycling items found in your home won't be quite as luxurious feeling as the t-shirt yarn you can buy, as that is made not from t-shirts, but from jersey fabric yardage, but seeing your kids clothes made into a rustic basket or a little rug is so much fun, not to mention easy on the wallet and eco-conscious.
So take a little break from all that hard work, check out this post about how to make t-shirt yarn, and cut up those t-shirts. The scraps can be used as rags for cleaning. Spring cleaning has never been so much fun!
P.S.: And of course do save those old sheets and anything made from woven sheeting fabric, as you can make yarn from sheets, a yarn that while more difficult to crochet with can be made into fantastic rugs, and really anything your little heart desires.
