If you need a necklace to complete an outfit, and you can crochet a chain, then you can whip up a super simple yet elegant beaded crocheted necklace in about ten minutes! This necklace was born, because my 12.5 year old daughter who has recently become fashion conscious and is learning to sew (a great combo!) said "I really need a long necklace with burgundy stones here and there to go with the faux leather burgundy skirt and creme quilted shirt (that I sewed myselt!)" Hmmm said mom, and after a trip to a special jewelry sale yielded nothing, my daughter actually agreed that I could make something, but what?
After rummaging through my stash, and finding a burgundy swarovski crystal bracelet strung on elastic that long ago lost its shape, and some beautiful pale pink glass beads, I realized that I had everything I needed to make a simple necklace, together with gold thread, and a small crochet hook.
The necklace was a huge hit with my daughter, added just the right amount of subtle burgundy to make her outfit work, and no one has of yet realized that it is crocheted, as it really looks like a gold chain!
You'll Need:
- 18 crystal beads (or for an adult size possibly 24)
- 6 much larger complimentary glass beads (or 8 for a long adult size)
- strong gold thread
- a 2mm crochet hook, or even smaller
How To:
- Without cutting a length of string, string the beads onto the thread in the order you would like them to be on your necklace. You can google "how to strings beads onto thread for crocheting" to find a good way to do this.
- Start a chain, and crochet 7 chains, slip the first bead down next to the hook, and make a chain around it, thus fixing it in place. Chain 7 more, and crochet around the next bead, and continue in this way until you use all the beads. You can calculate the exact length of the necklace and make it so that all the beads are uniformly spaced around the necklace, or just start crocheting and add more chains at the end to increase the length if needed.
- End off yarn, and tie the beginning tail and the end tail together tightly, and trim the ends.
Wow, wasn't that easy? Now you can make a ton of these for everyone!
Note:, The necklace is somewhat fragile and tangles easily, but well worth making as it is so quick and essentially free as you very likely have everything except for the gold thread on hand! And yes, it will tare if yanked on, but then again, so will a delicate gold chain, just something to keep in mind regarding the age of the recipient.
