I am really so overjoyed that my idea of using my little scrappy yarn ball to make a shag rug for a doll house actually worked, yippee! And of course you don't need a doll house, it is fun as is with some little figures. We'll very likely be using this rug and the other two I've promised to make to furnish some shoebox houses that my boys made in school as part of a unit about electricity.
And of course, one could make a round shag rug too, maybe I'll just have to try that next! One word of caution, because you are crocheting with yarn with so many ends, it does get a bit futzy at points, but well worth the extra patience, and I'm quite sure much much quicker than making a shag rug with a latch hook.
You'll Need:
- a ball of scrappy yarn made from ends from another project
- a crochet hook
- sharp scissors
How To Crochet A Dollhouse Shag Rug:
Quite simply crochet a rectangle in the desired size using the single crochet stitch, but instead of trying to bury the ends in your work try as much as possible not to bury them. Tie off. Take a crochet hook and pull all the ends to one side of the work. And then, take your scissors and give your rug a good hair cut so that it looks like a shag rug.

If there are spots in the rug with no shag effect, you can always tie some pieces around the sc stitches and trim to the same height, that should solve the problem. I'll admit I was lucky enough not to have to do this, it just depends on how long the ends were when you made your scrappy yarn ball.
