The temperatures here in Northern Israel reached 104 F yesterday and while we took a quick trip to the discount store to pick up some pool toys for the kids, I had to grab some medium sized number cookie cutters as I'd been wanting to try out the idea of a watermelon math themed party, for back to school, a birthday, a baby shower or really just for fun!
Cantelope is the perfect consistency to cut with cookie cutters and watermelon works too, but you'll need a firm watermelon and a bit of patience. I wouldn't dream of making platters of these as it is a bit fidgety and you'll have lots of little scraps to use up, but the results are fantastic looking! If you can find some even larger number cookie cutters, or just one large number for a birthday party, fruit skewers with a large number would look fantastic, while being quite a bit less labor intensive than cutting out a bunch of numbers!
I was also thinking that if your numbers are large enough and sturdy enough, they would also look great in a pitcher of water, or put individual numbers in glasses with a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint to make a refreshing and gorgeous drink! And of course, once you start thinking about cookie cutters and melon, there is really no limit to the amazing things one can do without having to be a professional food stylist!
