This year when my husband and the boys packed for their yearly Rosh HaShana retreat out of the country, I packed a large sealed envelope full of simple hand drawn birthday decorations and a roll of tape! Now these decorations wouldn't normally be a surprise if we were celebrating at home, as I've been making sweet and simple paper birthday decorations like these for years, but far away from home I'm quite sure they were appreciated more than usual. And to my surprise they actually brought the decorations home with them, a bit crumpled but still worth photographing to share with you
You'll Need:
- colored card stock
- a black permanent marker
- a little bit of creativity
How To: Simply draw numbers and birthday related items on pieces of colored paper and cut out. To make all the decorations roughly the same size, I use either a whole sheet of paper for the height, or half a sheet of paper. If you'll be making lots of decorations it is nice to have at least two sizes for a little visual variety.
And just for the record, while those perfect birthday parties with the printables, and that dessert bar sure do look nice, how about lowering the standard and encouraging kids to get creative with decorations? When everything has to be so perfect it starts to loose its charm, and isn't nearly as heartfelt as something made by hand. Give it some thought!
