After realizing that the sweet little one hour crocheted bonnet that I made last week wasn't quite right for the new baby boy in the extended family, I decided to make the quickest little crocheted baby hat that I know: the one-hour crocheted baby beanie, with a little crocheted button cover (omiting the actual button)on top. Okay, the addition of that button and weaving in the ends due to the color changes will add more time to the project, but it is still a quickie, especially after you've made one and don't need to refer to any instructions!
Oh, and of course, the zero-3 months size is what takes an hour, the larger sizes a bit more, but you could always make a chunky beanie in a bigger size, and that would be quick too, it just depends on whether you want something soft and pliable (lighter weight yarn, smaller hook) or whether something a bit firmer will also do.
I'd say as far as baby head sizes, unless one has actually seen the baby, it is hard to know what size hat to make, though knowing the weight of the baby would certainly help. And, truthfully if you're going to give a newborn sized hat, I'd make two as those little ones grow quickly and the hat will soon be too small!
While I do love pom poms, they are messy to make, and I'm never quite sure that they'll really stay intact, especially if there are other little ones in the family, so my solution? Crochet a little button to sew on top, which will stay looking great and is also oh so sweet.
Supplies:
- crochet hook: 5 mm
- medium weight yarn (yarn that specifies a 5mm hook on the label)
- note: this beanie can of course be crocheted with any size hook and yarn, you'll just need to look up standard sizes for baby hats and crochet accordingly.
- guage: 14 stitches in 4 inches, 12 rows in 4 inches
