On a recent trip to Ikea, I just couldn't resist buying quite a few packages of jumbo drinking straws in fabulous colors. At the time I thought I'd use them to make succah decorations, but fortunately that didn't happen, as now we're using them to make lots of Hanukkah crafts, starting with this drinking straw hanukkah dreidel garland. This craft comes together quite quickly and the results are fantastic.
So why not fill a whole wall with fun hanukkah decorations that also pack away nicely for next year!
You'll Need:
- colored straws, preferably jumbo sized
- glue gun (low temp for kids) or high-tack craft glue
- recycled cereal box or equivalent
- sharp scissors
- card stock or light weight cardboard
- yarn or string
Step 1: Make templates for your project, by drawing a small, medium and large dreidel on a piece of card stock. The simplest way to make sure your dreidel is symmetrical is to fold your paper in half and draw half a dreidel on the fold. Cut out the dreidel with the paper folded.
Step 2: Trace around paper templates onto recycled cardboard and cut out.
Step 3: Using a glue gun or high-tack craft glue, glue straws to your cardboard dreidel. Straws covering the neck of the dreidel must be glued on horizontally for stringing later.
Step 4: Turn dreidel over and using sharp scissors cut around the dreidel shape to remove excess straw lengths. If this is difficult with your scissors, cut each straw individually after gluing one at a time.
Step 5: String dreidels using string or yarn by simply running yarn through one of the straws on the neck of the dreidel. Add beads made from small sections of straws, and add the stars by simply
tying them on to the main string.
To make the drinking straw stars follow my simple drinking straw stars tutorial.
I hope you enjoy this craft and would love to see your versions!
