Come to think of it, there is really nothing all that caring about giving your loved ones all kinds of food colored and sugar coated treats just to show your love on a commercial holiday, is there? Okay, I know, I know, the pressure in on to conform, and if a bunch of people are eating this way, then your family wants it too......believe me I experience the same thing on a regular basis. So, while depriving our families of treats isn't the healthiest thing to do in the long run, we can make an effort to show our love with some healthier options! So I now introduce to you, simple radish roses and carrot hearts, the healthy way to show your love! And these two shapes are so simple to carve, you may even want to use them for birthdays and other festive occasions.
The fun thing about carrot hearts is that you can also use this trick with cooked carrots, namely not overly mushy cooked carrots, but carrots cooked just enough to be soft. Sweet isn't it? And since these carrots are not cut individually you really can make quite a few quite quickly, especially with the cooked carrot idea.
And as far as the simple rose radishes go, you don't need more than a few, and once you get the hang of it, you can easily make some. Plus they certainly do keep well in the fridge, so you can carve a bunch during a quiet moment and set aside to use later. I do believe though that they keep best in water.
The main point with the rose radishes is to get the first five cuts placed properly around the radish, as that dictates the next cuts. If you like you can make marks around the perimeter, and then remove a little slice of skin on that mark to serve as a guide for the first cuts shown in the diagram above.
Heart shapes carrots are cut from a length of carrot with portions removed as shown in the diagram above. Hope this little tutorial has been helpful and that it is one step closer to sharing the love, healthfully! If you'd like to save this on Pinterest, I've compiled all the diagrams in one, below:
