I needed an adorable handmade gift for a sweet three year old girl who loves her "babies" and this crocheted doll bassinet using t-shirt yarn seemed simple enough, and with great results, so why not give it a try? And, great news, the gift was received with much excitement, and the little three year old told me "I told you to give me this" meaning "this is exactly what I wanted, though I didn't know I wanted it." Soooooo, fellow crocheters, give this project a try, it is really quite simple, and you too can delight a little baby doll lover in your life. And of course while you are at it, don't forget to make a simple no-sew fleece doll blanket to complete the gift! Ah yes, and just by the way, this was crocheted with t-shirt yarn and a relatively smal hook (6.5mm) but you could also crochet this pattern using cotton rope, which would be great as well. I love that the t-shirt yarn bassinet is machine washable, which will likely be necessary after carrying around all those baby dolls! Okay, lets get crocheting.....
I opted to make the base of the bassinet slightly differently from the pattern, and will provide the link to that pattern in the instructions. I do love the base as a different color though, adds that extra something!
You'll Need:
- commercial t-shirt yarn, mine is made from industrial waste, two colors if desired
- a crochet hook that results in a tight structure, mine was 6.5mm
- crochet bassinet pattern, here (translated into English, so you'll have to use your head a bit)
- crochet oval pattern here (optional) it is in Spanish, but there is a diagram
How To:
Be brave and just figure out the pattern, you'll need a little bit of crochet experience to do that, but just go for it. Plus there are great step by step photos, so really not a problem. I used the alternate oval pattern for the base as using the base pattern as stated resulted in a piece that was just too wavy, so I opted for a pattern with rows of DC to fix that problem, and problem was fixed.
This bassinette fits an 18" doll, well actually the recipient stuffed 2 18" baby dolls into hers, but you get the idea. Enjoy!
PS: To make the changing pad/mattress that can be seen in some of the photos, check out my post about that here.
