I have been wanting to crochet a pear for ages, partly to go with my daughter's pirum parum poster, and partly because who can resist a crocheted pear? And who can resist a crocheted pear that is big enough to be a pillow or couch prop, certainly not me, and I am truly in love with the results of taking a regular crocheted pear pattern and using t-shirt yarn to make it something different altogether, yippee! So, as you can see, once you start crocheting pears from t-shirt yarn you really have to crochet at least three, as they look just so amazing together, right? I was crocheting that black pear on a car trip with my husband and he had no idea what I was up to, and only saw the results when I gave it to him as a chanukah present......of course he didn't appreciate my efforts, but that is okay, I didn't really crochet it for him, but rather as some fun decor for our bedroom or any little spot in the house in need of some giant fruit! Okay friends, lets get crocheting......
- t-shirt yarn
- a metal hook, I used either a 10mm or a 6.5mm, depending on the thickness of the yarn which always varies ( I don't happen to have the sizes in between, but you should get them)
- a crocheted pear pattern
- a crocheted leaf pattern
- a very large eyed yarn needle
- stuffing, I used plastic bags and all kinds of recycled stuff honestly, and if you want the pear to stand up, stuff it with something heavy!
How To:
Crochet according to instructions and feel free to add some extra rows if you need to in order to get the pear shape that pleases you. Plus crocheting with t-shirt yarn does not always produce predictable results and takes some patience, but in this case it is well worth it! There is no leaf on her pear, but I thought my giant pears could use a leaf, so you decide.
Also, I do believe that for the stem I did not follow the pattern but rather did a row of slip stitches into a chain to produce a stem that seems in proportion.
Basic Crocheted Leaf Pattern:
- Ch 10. dc into 3rd chain from hook, htr into next ch, tr into next ch, htr into next ch, dc into next ch, hdc into next ch, sc into last 2 ch. (You should have run out of chain here!)
- Make picot by ch3, slst into 3rd ch from hook. This is the point of the leaf.
- Now working along the opposite side of the leaf, sc into first 2ch, hdc into next 2ch, dc into next ch, htr into next ch, dc into the next ch, sc into last ch.
- This is not an exact science, and no two leaves are alike, so be brave and improvise using the basic pattern here.
Enjoy!
