As you may or may not know, I am, among many things, a graphic designer and I have at times specialized in logos, so when I was asked to write this article I thought, sure why not? Regardless of what kind of business you are building, the basic principles of how to go about designing a logo, or even working with a designer and evaluating their work are the same. We'll use the example of a children's clothing store, because that is relatively simple, and fun. So lets get started!
When opening a children's clothing store, it is important not only to fill it with an attractive and diverse range of goods, but also of course to create a unique overall style that invites potential customers to take a closer look and makes the products look great. The logo is an important part of the store's design, and truthfully not enough effort generally goes into graphics! (Said as a graphic designer and interior designer.) The main key is to really make sure that the graphics and the interior design are on the same level, so often I see a lovely store with low level graphics, yikes!
But where to start if you are doing it yourself? Children's clothing store graphics might use bold and round fonts, and soft colors like purple, pink, yellow, light blue, light green. Or decide to go for something that is clean and modern and can be used together with shapes, colors and patterns that will change with the season. In addition, playful symbols are a great benefit as they can be used in many ways. And again, while in this article, you will learn how to create the perfect logo for a children's clothing store the tips I've outlined here can be used for designing a logo for any business.
Things To Consider When Creating A Children's Clothing Store Logo
Branding products for children is just as serious a task as branding products for adults. Indeed, in this case, the consumer may not be the one who pays for the goods, therefore, the brand should attract not only small customers, but also their parents. And while this may seem difficult, the logo should communicate the essence of the business!
- Children's logos should be attractive and recognizable at any scale, and should be void of too many details, such as a photo, because if you reduce them, they will become a colored spot and individual elements will not be visible.
- Make sure that any fonts used are very readable at any size and will translate well for any desired manufacturing of signs
- A popular logo symbol might be a silhouette of a child with parents for example or for a baby store, possibly of a mother with a baby. Or how about a bird, a balloon, a ladybug etc.?
- Any logo should work in black and white, so that it can be easily applied to woven clothing tags, and other applications that may use only two colors.
- A logo that a child can remember and associate with a positive experience in your store, or a favorite item, is a big plus.
Selecting The Elements In A Logo
- When designing a logo, the biggest advice I can give is go simple!
- Make sure that that the logo functions practically and technically as an aesthetic marketing tool.
- A logo can be either a name plus a symbol, or a name that is the symbol, or a name that has the symbol as one of the letters.
Choosing Colors
There is no "right" color when it comes to designing a logo for children, though it is generally best to avoid a mix of primary colors used together, which can look dated. Get creative with the color use, for example how about a blue apple or a green giraffe?
Development methods
There are two ways to create a logo for a children's clothing store - do it yourself, or contact designers. Designing a logo yourself will certainly be a budget plus, but make sure that you aren't saving money on something that is a truly important part of your business. If you choose to go the DIY route, understand that the design process takes time, on the other hand, the process will be completely under your control. Here are a few things to consider:
- You can use online services to create logos. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. An excellent resource is Turbologo where if you are pressed for time, you may even be able to develop a unique logo in just a few minutes, or at least get the ball rolling as far as where to start.
- Design twenty of those 2 minute logos, compare them and see what works and what doesn't. Then go back to the drawing board and work some more.
- Take photos of your storefront or signage and apply the logo to the photo to see if it works!
- Use some mock up templates to apply your logo or logo options to bags, t-shirts etc. and then compare your results with those of top brands.
- Show friends or coworkers 3 logos and have then pick their favorite
Conclusion
Remember your logo is the face of your store, so it should inspire confidence, professionalism and great design sense. And of course if this is a dream project, make sure that it feels like you! I wish you great success!
