Sometimes crafting is really all about creativity and certainly crafts that marry "art" and craft! This craft started out as a painted paper botanical collage to add to the series I worked on last Fall, however, things did not go quite as I had hoped and the results were, well, just too cute. Oh dear, toss it, share it on Instagram anyway (no thanks....) then it occurred to me, just cut out the cute parts, and one I started cutting I realized I could make a cute stand-up tulips collage piece to celebrate Spring. Phew, so all the time I spend on the collage did not go to waste, instead my somewhat neglected (on account of all the art going on) crafting just got a boost, and at a time when the world could sure use something light hearted. Sweet collages like this are a great way to add festive touches to the home for the upcoming holiday of Purim, as well as to sparkling clean areas ready for Passover! While my stand up collage is quite small, as it was made on a 4" x 6" piece of paper, you could intentionally make this craft and go quite a bit bigger! Okay, lets do it!
- collage paper, mine is deli paper painted with acrylic paint, with lots of brush strokes to get texture
- matte medium, decoupage medium or white glue diluted so it spreads easily with a paintbrush
- a paint pen or white gel pen to add details at the end
- white cardstock
- a wine cork for small collages, cereal box cardboard for larger ones
How To:
- Prepare your collage paper by simply using left over paint (or not) to paint deli paper. One can paint tissue paper as well, but it does not hold up like deli paper. Deli paper is porous, so paint it with another sheet underneath!
- Plan your collage, or wing it, you decide!
- Draw shapes on the deli paper that you need to cut out for your collage.
- Affix the shapes to the paper, painting both under and over the collage.
- Once dry, add details with a paint pen, sharpie, black marker or white gel pen.
- Cut out, and add a stand to the back, mine is a wine cork which works well for a small piece, you may need to make an easel back from a piece or cereal box cardboard.
- Alternately, if for example you'd like to make a cake topper, or something to stick in a vase, simply glue a long skewer to the back!
I hope you enjoyed this fun project, and this intro to painted paper collage!
