With the Jewish holiday of Shavuot coming this Saturday night, now is the time to decorate the house with flowers and greenery, so why not make some cardboard or paper versions that you can then use again, or that keep looking great? My cardboard cactus with blooms is quite quick to make, and of course while I made just a few branches of zygocactus, you can opt to make a much larger plant. If you have a small plant of any kind, namely a real one, sticking your cardboard plant into that pot can look quite good, as the real plant fills out the background. Okay, time is of the essence, lets get started!
- cardboard (not corrugated) of any kind, a cereal box or heavier, mine is the backing of a pad of paper
- black paint or ink
- color of some kind that will cover the black, i used Stabilo woody pencils, but acrylic paint, gouche paint, oil pastels, or quality crayons can work
- a pencil and sharp scissors or a craft knife
How To:
- Look up zygocactus to use as a reference, then with a pencil draw the outline of your plant
- Paint the entire shape with black, to make a silhouette, set aside to dry.
- Add color to the black shape as seen below.
- Cut out the shape, and stick it into an existing plant, or find a container that can look like a plant pot. enjoy!
The black base layer peeking through give the cardboard cactus nice definition such that it does not get lost when placed in a pot with a real plant!
