On our local outings during the holiday of Passover we visited the ancient gravesite of Ovadia HaNavi in Baram, Northern Israel. I'm just now getting around to sharing my photos with you, because, well, life is busy, and I'll admit that I've been favoring my @sara.rivka.dahan instagram account, meaning I have not been creating content for my precious blog, but rather art and illustration, though yes, I need to post more of that here. Lest I digress, lets visit this wonderful site! Please note: While Wayz will bring you to the approximate location, so you have to be a little bit adventurous to find it! There isn't really a sign on the street, but it is just beyond the Baram cemetary entrance, so look for the blue dome.
Above: The dome was built over a burial cave at some point.
Ovadia HaNavi was one of the main 48 prophets of Israel. He was a Edomite convert who rose to the rank of King Achov's personal estate manager. Edom is an ancient land bordering ancient Israel. Present-day Edom is now southwestern Jordan, located between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba. King Achov, or also spelled Achab was known to be an evil king and was the seventh king of the northern kingdom of Israel (ruled c. 874–853 BCE). His father King Omri, was the 6th King.
Ovadia was very G-D fearing and when Jezebel married King Achab of Israel, she persuaded him to introduce the worship of the Tyrian god Baal-Melkart, a nature god. Most of the Jewish prophets were killed at her command, though Ovadia HaNavi hid 100 of them in a double cave. Ovadia was a student of Achia Hasheloni, a Levite prophet of Shiloh in the days of Solomon, as mentioned in the Torah's First Books of Kings.
Ovadia HaNavi was considered to be a part of Eliyahu Hanavi's beit din. His prophecy predicting the doom of Edom is contained in the forth book of the Twelve Prophets consisting of only one chapter.
Wow, ancient history is a bit hard to fathom, so lets just say Ovadia HaNavi was truly something amazing, and we are fortunate to be able to learn about him and visit his grave!
The location is just on the edge of a grape orchard, lovely!
In the early spring, the vines are just getting started.
Inside the dome, built over the cave.......
Hope you enjoyed this little piece of history and a visit to one of the Jewish People's major prophets!
