Is there a cat lover on your gift list that you'd like to treat with a fantastic DIY crocheted cat cave or bed? I'd say it is a great idea, as even if the cat doesn't quite end up liking it, it can always be used as a basket of sorts! (Especially the acorn shaped one I'm eyeing!) And some of these crocheted cat beds are so quick to make, you may just want to include it as part of a larger gift, like a custom pet portrait for example, which can be anything from an original painting, in either acrylic or watercolor, (there are many artists on Etsy that offer custom pet portraits, though plan ahead) or something that could be quite large, such as a printed photo portrait. I recently became aware of some really unique pet portraits that involve making the pet look like he is wearing a uniform or period costume, and truly this makes an epic gift. But getting back to crocheting that amazing cat cave, lets take a look at some of the free patterns I've gathered here, to send you on your way! Ah yes, and there are so many new chunky yarns out there, so take your pick and enjoy!
I just adore this acorn shaped cat cave with free pattern from hobbii. Even if you don't have a cat it could be cute in a child's room as a place to keep dolls, or as a fairy house/toy bin! The yarn looks delicious, though one can certainly use any yarn that is the same ultra chunky gage. Just looked it up, the yarn used is Bungee Mini, which is a tube yarn that consists of a soft cotton tube with filling. Wow, would love to get my hands on some of that!
This sweet t-shirt yarn cat cave with a free pattern from Lion Brand is great looking and imperfect, so you could also make it from yarn made by cutting up old tricot fabric sheets or t-shirts. The yarn used here is called Fettucine, a t-shirt yarn, which is no longer available, but there are many other similar products on the market, just look for something that is a weight of 6.
This great looking cat cave from Joann, uses another type of bulky yarn, and would look great in a sleek modern interior. This uses 7 skeins of a yarn called Bernat Maker Big, which is a soft and chunky tubular yarn and certainly looks interesting!
Love this cozy cat bed that is very quick to make given the size of the yarn! Check out the complete instructions at loganberry handmade.
This fun winter hat shaped cat bed, that can also be a shark, was made using a metal lampshade frame, and so it is on the crafty side. You can find rough instructions with a pdf file from bubanana. Go for it!
This gorgeous cat bed is more of a traditional crochet project than those I've shared above, and the results are truly stunning, and a bit more predictable as the guage is much much smaller. This uses 11 skeins of Homebrand super bulky yarn, and you can certainly change up the colors. You can find the complete pattern right here from Lionbrand.
I hope you've enjoyed this round up of cat cave or cat bed crochet patterns, I had a great time learning about all the super chunky new yarns out there!
