This year I'm adding something new to my already very vast archive of chanukah crafts.......paper candles craft! I'm truly loving these paper candles and can't wait to use them in so many ways this chanukah. You can make paper candles to fit into a chanukah menorah that you won't be lighting or to put into candlesticks for a festive and safe touch anywhere, or why not make chanukah menorahs from just about anything and add these fun paper candles? Aluminum foil boxes make great bases (okay, yes, maybe time for a remake of that old idea!) as do any many boxes, or just about anything really! So get those creative gears turning and make a bunch of paper candles to create your best chanukah decorations yet! And the fun part about these paper candles is that you can make them in the exact size you need, so lets get started!
You'll Need:
- cardstock or any paper really, how about using recycled magazine pages?
- glue, hot glue and/or double sided tape
- sparkle craft foam, or anything with dimension for the band (i'll tell you why in the directions, or when you'll want to include one)
- sparkly craft foam flames, tutorial here
How To:
- My candles are nice and sturdy because I used the whole length of a sheet of A4 paper for each one, only varying the height from full height to half height
- Candles are quite simple made by rolling the paper into a tight tube, and then adhering based on how thick your candle needs to be.
- Once you have the paper rolled tightly, stick the "candle" into the candlestick, menorah or wine bottle that will hold it, and slowly release your grip on the tube so that it expands to fill the space, voila, now your candle is the right size to fit snuggly where ever it needs to, just make sure to hold it in place while you glue it!
- In the case of a tall thin candle placed into a small cup, like for a chanukah menorah, additional support is suggested, via a craft foam band placed just above the rim of the cup.
- In the case of placing a candle into a wine or alchol bottle (looks amazing!) you'll want a craft foam band to keep the candle from sliding down into the bottle. Place this band on the paper candle while it is sitting in the cup/bottle so you place it correctly.
- After you've place a band if needed, and glued the vertical seam in place, it is time to add the sparkly flame.
- Using a toothpick nudge/fold the very inside edge of the paper so that it sits across the middle (or with an additional row if paper is thin) and appears like a circle with a slash across it, forming a surface on which to glue the flame so it sits in the middle of the candle
- Using hot glue, squeeze a huge clump of glue down into the candle onto the edge that you folded to the middle. Place toothpick end of flame into hot glue and hold in place until dry.
That is it, now you can figure out how to do this your way, or use my directions and then make up some of your own! Either way, get crafting!
