Want to make a quick crocheted gift to use up some of your stash, or maybe to give yarn from a previous now unraveled scarf a new life? One of my crafting students quietly asked me if I'd crochet something for him, so I dove into my basket of stash and this pouch, together with two others was created. I made up the pattern as I went along, which one certainly can and should do with a project as simple as a drawstring pouch! That said, I'm writing out the pattern for those who are just giving crochet a try! And friends, summer is a wonderful time to make things for holiday giving, and having a bunch of crocheted pouches on hand when Chanukah arrives is certainly a wonderful thing! Okay, lets crochet a simple drawstring pouch with stripes.
You'll Need:
- Color B: variegated yarn, sorry not sure what mine is, I unraveled a almost never-worn scarf from 10 years ago!
- Color A: black yarn
- crochet hook 6mm, or hook size indicated on yarn sleeve
- a small piece of t-shirt yarn or ribbon for the drawstring
- fun wooden beads, truly a must as they are the cherry on top!
Simple Crocheted Pouch With Stripes Pattern:
My Bag dimensions: 14cm x 19cm tall, but neither guage nor size are important, go with what works for you!
A drawstring pouch is simply a tube constructed with a round base, and a row of double crochet near the top where you'll weave in the drawstring. So simply put, one crochetes a circular base, and then vertical sides. For the first row of the sides, one crochets in the back look of the previous row, as with any basket project. With this pouch I crocheted 2 rows in the back loop because I've become accustomed to doing this for a transition that is more distinct, though it does produce an additional ridge on the fabric, which you may or may not like.
Round 1: Using color A, black, Start with a magic ring and crochet 6 sc into the ring. Pull the ring tight, and join to first stitch with slip stitch
Round 2: ch1, 2sc in each stitch, join to first stitch with slip stitch
Round 3: ch1, 1 sc in first stitch 2sc in second stitch around, join to first stitch with slip stitch
Round 4: ch1, 1 sc in first two stitches, 2sc in third stitch around, join to first stitch with slip stitch
Round 5: ch1, 1 sc in first three stitches, 2 sc in fourth stitch, around, join to first stitch with slip stitch
Round 6: ch1, 1 sc in first four stitches, 2 sc in fifth stitch, around, join to first stitch with slip stitch
My circular base measures roughly 8cm in diameter. For a larger pouch keep on crocheting more rounds using the formula stated.
Round 7-8: Using color B, variegated: ch2 and hdc in the back loop of each stitch around, join to first hdc with a slip stitch ( I like to do two rows of crocheting in the back loop, you don't have to)
Round 9-11: Using color B, variegated: ch2 and hdc in each stitch around, join to first hdc with a slip stitch
Round 10-11: Using color A, ch1 and sc in each stitch around, join to first sc with a slip stitch (black stripe)
Round 12-13: Repeat round 9
Round 14-15: Repeat round 10 (black stripe)
Round 16-17: Repeat round 9
Round 18-19: Repeat round 10 (black stripe)
Rounds 20-22: Repeat round 9
Round 23: Ch3, dc around, join to first dc with a slip stitch
Round 24: Repeat round 9
Rounds 25-27: Repeat round 10 (black stripe)
Weave in drawstring skipping every two dcs such that both ends end up in same hole. Add fun beads, and make someone happy by filling it with something fun, or giving as is to hold their treasures!
