My baby just turned 18, and for a quick cake in my usual style I came up with the idea of making cake toppers from all the nicknames he had as a child.......I have to say I love the results and the cake looked quite cute! The lettering idea came about as I've been working on lettering for a counting the omer art journal, so it is currently something that comes naturally to me. And truly, whether you are working on your lettering or not, these cake toppers are so simple to make and do look fun. Origami Horse Cake Toppers Are Cute As Can Be!

Ever seen a cake topper that is a horse dressed up as a unicorn? Me neither but it just seemed perfect for a four year old!

Right now I'm in the process of using up all the flour in the house as we prepare for Passover, and the first step for me is to bake challahs and a few deserts, and freeze everything we'll need for the next 2 shabbats, or more or less anyway, we can always, gasp, buy any challah we need for the shabbat before Passover! Since cake is the topic in my kitchen right now, I thought I'd share wtih you these fun origami horse cake toppers that I used for a birthday cake this past shabbat, and together with sprinkles, and large white gumdrops, a fun cake was born! Ah yes, and around the bottom of the cake I took colorful cupcake liners, folded them in half and placed them like petals, which gave the bundt cake a lovely finished look, phew! DIY Plastic Bag Pom Pom Cake Toppers

Looking for a festive cake topper idea in a pinch? How about plastic bag pom pom cake toppers? I'll admit, this was truly a last minute idea as I had made the pom poms to hang from our dining room table chandelier but hadn't quite gotten around to it, so I quickly stuck skewers into the pom poms and voila a festive cake was born. I'll admit that these toppers would be more successful on a high cake rather than my chocolate chip cookie cake, but with the cake placed on a cake stand, and some red rose petals on the table to add more color, it worked. After the birthday party I removed the skewers and got one of my teen sons to hang the pom poms where they added a festive touch for the week of chanukah together with some golden wire dreidels. While I've been doing the more sophisticated look in our dining room lately, loving the return of some fun color via a great recycling craft, so the pom poms may just stay for Tu B'Shevat and then Purim!

DIY Magic Wand Birthday Cake (In A Pinch!)

Simple and cute birthday cakes are my trademark, and truly the only kind of birthday cake that fits into my schedule, and suits my cake decorating abilities! I prefer to spend time on decorations that we can enjoy long after the birthday celebration rather than on a cake that looks great on the table, but of course gets eaten! For my daughter's 19th birthday, I had thought of making a watermelon cake, but realized at the last minute, that although she is 19, she still wants the same feeling of Mommy making her a birthday cake, even if she doesn't eat any of it! So while Mommy has largely exited the realm of baking, she did whip up the family classic quick and great tasting chocolate cake, while her daughter was sleeping, and then hid he cake in her office to decorate later, with a combo of decorations she already had on hand (par for the course!)
