DIY Waldorf Style Stand Up Doll

This past summer we rented a wonderful home on kibbut harduf (learn about it here) that was filled with homemade Waldorf-style toys and crafts, so I just had to photograph them to share with you. In the case of the felt dolls, I even found the book with the instructions next to the craft table, so you can actually make this wonderful felt king from this post. I think I'd love to make some too! Felt Waldorf-style dolls make wonderful creative gifts this holiday season, so why not give it a try?

Felted Wool Mug Cozies For Chanukah!

Another project I'm pulling from the archives because this one is so much fun, and makes a great holiday gift!

Wool felt is a truly wonderful material available in a nice range of luscious rich colors, can be purchased in 12"x12" squares, and since it doesn't unravel, you can craft away to your heart's content without the need for glue or sewing, if you so desire. This DIY felt mug cozy is quick and would make a wonderful gift this holiday season, together of course with some lovely mugs! I have added the Hanukkah themed details to my mug cozies using felting, with a multiple needle felting tool and a felting pad, though one can also of course add embroidery, or attach shapes with embroidery, or even add a few lovely beads or buttons.

A coffee cup cozy for paper coffee cups would be made in exactly the same way, and even if you don't know the exact size of the cup you could make your cozy on the small side and use an elastic chord loop instead of a button hole. Got it? Now go make a bunch, maybe even with the felted initials of the recipient, as these work up really quickly!

Adventures In Needle Felting Part 3: Needle Felting On Fabric For Kids!

 

Isn't this sweet? My daughter made this yesterday after seeing Mommy hard at work at the kitchen table with her first attempts at needle felting here. (I do have one small confession to make, Mommy added the orange border to give the blanket that little finishing touch, but the rest was done completely unsupervised !)

Needle felting using tools purchased in any major craft supply store, is a great craft for kids too. The tools are manageable for any child that can write, say 6 years or older, and though there are sharp needles involved , warranting parental supervision, it really isn't all that un-safe compared to say knives or power tools!

I purchased my needle felting tools from fabric.com, my favorite online fabric store who now happily carries some other goodies! (And yes, I'm an affiliate advertiser, but I'm only selling something I love....) and I have yet to experiment with felting with roving, a whole wide world in itself!

Adventures In Needle Felting Part 2: Yarn + Wool Fabric Applique

 
Here's what mommy made yesterday afternoon while running the house from the kitchen table! Though quite honestly a bit time consuming, and a little tedious, I'm still interested in pursuing this technique some more. And the best part of it all is that after I completed my project the needle felting continued for several more hours with the younger set making their own projects, which I'll share with you tomorrow! (Adult supervision advisable for young children, since there are needles involved, but I'd say a hot glue gun or a knife of any kind are much more dangerous...)

For this project I used a base of light weight woven woolen fabric (from a scarf that accidentally got ruined in the washing machine...thanks Dena!) and applique pieces of medium weight woolen fabric (the kind used for braided rugs and rug hooking) and wool yarn.
