DIY Recycled Cardboard Roosters Craft For Yom Kippur

Pulling this one out of the archives because it is just too sweet and too wonderful not to share. Make a giant cardboard rooster for Yom Kippur, and then use him any time! Give him a birthday crown? A ski hat? You got the picture, so go for it!

Ever thought about using some recycled cardboard to make some fun cardboard roosters? Truthfully, I hadn't either, but after making a black rooster and a white rooster, well I just want to make some more. I made them to use as stage props in a school play, but they'd look great in a child's room, or even in your kitchen, so have some fun and make a cardboard rooster, or two or three! Assuming you have a bit of paint on hand the rest of the supplies are basically free, so this is a budget friendly craft project as well......ah yes, and with the Jewish holiday of Purim coming, well filling the house with roosters and chickens could be quite festive, and certainly sure to bring a laugh. Okay, lets get started.......

Painted Watercolor Feather Cut-Outs For Crafting

Watercolor feathers are so fun to paint and make great decorations for any occasion or to use as part of craft project truly any time! It is true I painted these for the Jewish holiday of L'Ag B'Omer because one of the symbols of the holiday is the bow and arrow, and arrows include feathers often, soooooo, maybe a bit of a stretch but fun nonetheless! I was planning to make a wall hanging by hanging the feathers, staggered, from a branch, but ran out of time, so maybe I'll have to do is for Succot, as the feather is also a symbol to use in the Succah. So paint yourself some feathers in any size you please, they could also make great gift tags, place holders, and more! Experiment with different combinations of colors, and do get large paper and make some large ones, which are truly so great looking! Are you sold? Lets do it......

Yom Kippur starts on Tuesday night, so now is the time to honor the holiday with some simple recycling crafts! It is true, that if you are building a succah, crafting time might be more well spent on making succah decorations, but if you are among those that travel to family for Succot, then why not make some Yom Kippur crafts? And, two out of the four crafts I've presented here can also be used in the Succah, so with time of the essence, lets get crafting!

Upcycled Calender Starburst Wall Decor, For the Succah?

I just fingered last year's calender and thought I'd save it as scrap paper. What is happening to me? Scrap paper, no, craft paper! Hmmm, I guess that is what happens when you start to focus on art rather than craft, but not to worry, I've straightened myself out and am now thinking origami with the old calender, phew. So, I am reposting this because it is a goodie!

I'll be the first to admit, crafts for Yom Kippur are rarely something I've had time for, as the holiday occurs just four days before Succot, for which I am crafting up a storm. That said, this year I am mending my ways and trying to post at least a few simple ideas for the holiday, as after all, every holiday deserves crafts right? This year I decided to try out some simple recycling craft techniques by creating a few things for Yom Kippur, and I'll be using those same techniques for Succah decorations as well. That is the plan anyway, but I just never know how things will go, as you know once the creative gears get turning, well there is no stopping them!

We are now at the beginning of the new Jewish year, so that means that recycling last year's calendar is not only perfect because well, obviously that calendar is no longer of use, but also because we are now in the period in which we making amends for all the things that didn't go so well last year, as well as giving thanks for all the things that did go well. The completion of a year, and the beginning of new one certainly means that using that old calendar for any recycling craft is meaninful and practical!

A Mixed Media Rooster Painting For Yom Kippur!

Tonight we usher in the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which includes a mandatory 25 hour fast for all those healthy and over the age of bar/bat mitzvah, and in my case a day spent in the synagogue with our community, which is the only place I'd want to be on this day of atonement. Since my kids are also in synagogue with me and my husband, I no longer have to worry about them! Mothers with young kids try to come to synagogue for the evening service, which is very beautiful, and for the last service at the end of the day when the shofar is sounded and the fast is broken. I don't usually invest much in crafts for Yom Kippur, as it isn't a festive day, though crafting is important for all the holidays, so while I had originally thought of making some origami roosters to share with you, I instead delved into painting a quickish mixed media rooster painting instead! And yes, I did overwork it a bit more than was necessary, but trying to get to that really loose and quick results isn't simple and does take practice. So this is rooster #1, and I have a feeling there will be more in my future, plus the rooster is a symbol for Yom Kippur, so a great thing to paint today! And a note to busy parents: let the kids make a mess, even today, it is an important part of their development, namely painting and creating, and a little mess is surely worth it!

Recycled Magazine Page Feathers

Feathers are such a lovely thing to make out of paper, and with Yom Kippur in just two days, and Succot following four days after that, well there is no time like the present than to whip up some great recycled magazine page feathers yourself! Jewish holidays aside, they'd also look just lovely in a baby's room if done in pastel colors, and in a child's room done in brights. Make a really big one and frame it for some gorgeous wall art! (Just thought of that, gotta try it, just wish i had an oblong frame........)

On Yom Kippur we liken ourselves to angels as much as possible, and feathers are certainly a great symbol for that, right? Tape a few feathers on your door, or anywhere, just use removable tape, and then mount those feathers to some thick cardboard, or even put them in a frame as a lovely decoration for the succah! Of course they'd also look great hanging from a hoop, dream catcher style, or strung as a garland, so make a bunch!
